You must protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Ultraviolet radiation ( UV light ) from sunlight is the major environmental contributor to skin aging.

The term for this is photoaging. It is caused by the release of free radicals in the skin from UV exposure. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cell membranes.

They can cause damage to any part of the body, but in the facial skin, the effect may be dramatic. Free radicals can alter the major supporting proteins of the skin, elastin and collagen, thereby enhancing the natural loss of the skin's elasticity and resiliency. The build-up of free radicals can result in pronounced wrinkling and sagging of the skin, making quality facial skin care even more important.

The facial skin can be protected from the free radicals of UV light by applying a cream or lotion to the face daily that has been enriched with a natural antioxidant. The antioxidant protects and detoxifies the skin by neutralizing free radicals. In addition, the antioxidant aids in the production of new collagen and elastin skin proteins, thereby making the skin more substantive.

Increased pigmentation of the skin is also associated with aging. The increased pigmentation is caused by the overactivity of skin cells called melanocytes. Splotching of aging skin is due to an uneven deposition of pigment in the outer layer of the skin.

A skin brightener and/or lightener is essential to any facial skin care regimen to smooth out skin tones and blotches. It is best to use skin brighteners and/or lighteners that utilize natural substances to unify skin color in a facial skin care regimen.

Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) is commonly used in skin brightening and/or lightening creams. Vitamin C can effectively reduce the hyperpigmentation associated with aging skin. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant and can destroy free radicals, thereby preserving the integrity of the skin. This is another reason why creams and/or lotions containing vitamin C should be part of a facial skin care regimen for aging skin.
