You may notice the appearance of freckles or dark spots and the skin may not be as clear as it used to be. Therefore, if you want to do something about it, take a look at these natural homemade facial masks to lighten your skin tone.

A homemade mask is an easy and effective way to lighten your skin tone and a good excuse to relax on the couch. Here are four facial masks recipes that are excellent for lightening skin tone. These can be used once a week. If you are allergic to any of the ingredients please avoid that recipe. Some may contain fruits that are high in citric acid; although these work very well for lightening skin they can be harsh on sensitive skin. Try a small spot test to avoid irritating you whole face. Use caution when applying these masks; avoid spreading the mixtures too close to the eyes and mouth.

Licorice extract


One agent that works a natural skin whitener is glabridin. Glabridin can be found in licorice extract. You can purchase licorice extract at most health food stores or order it online. Licorice extract can be applied directly to the skin with a cotton ball. It should be applied in a thin layer to a clean dry face in the mornings.

Turmeric Mask


To make turmeric facial masks mix 1 tsp of turmeric with a small amount of water, milk or plain yogurt and add a few drops of honey. Mix this until you get a nice consistent paste if it is too runny you can add a little flour.

Spread your mixture to a clean dry face avoiding the areas around the eyes. Leave the mask on until it completely dries. You can use warm water to remove. This turmeric masks makes and excellent lightener but can be quite messy and can stain your towels or wash cloths.

Lemon Juice Facial Masks


One of the best natural lighteners for facial skin is lemon juice. Lemons have been commonly known for their ability to bleach and lighten hair colors, but the acidic nature of this tart fruit also makes it an effective skin lightener.

You can use fresh squeezed lemon juice. With cotton balls apply directly to the skin. Let this dry for about ten minutes and it can be easily removed with warm water. Mix with grape seed oil or olive oil if pure lemon juice is too harsh for your skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar Facial Masks


Apple Cider Vinegar is composed of several minerals, vitamins, salts and amino acids. Some research suggests that it also contains sulfur, which makes it a very good skin toner and a very great agent for lightening dark spots.

You can use apply cider vinegar by applying it with a well doused pad or cotton ball directly to the skin two times a day. Remember that apple cider vinegar is acidic, so if you have sensitive skin, try a very small test spot first. Once dry you can apply your favorite moisturizer to re-hydrate the skin.
