Most people are happy with their skin coloring. But if you got too much sun, feel your skin is too dark, or you have blemishes you want to get rid of, and then skin lightening treatments are the perfect solution for brightening your skin tone. You don’t have to go to a spa or dermatologist to do it. Here are a few skin whitening home remedies you can use to achieve the skin tone you desire.

Do-It-Yourself Skin Whitening

1. Lemon/Lime Juice

Lemon and lime juice are natural skin bleaching agents, especially lemon juice. The acid in lemons and limes exfoliates the outermost layer of skin cells stripping away the excess coloring. There are several ways you can use these natural juices. Combine coconut or vitamin E oil with the juice of a lemon or lime and apply to the area you want to lighten twice per day. The juices can be drying so the oil will help the skin stay moisturized while the juice lightens it.

Another option is to add the juice to your favorite cleanser. Use circular motions when cleaning the skin and avoid the eye area. Be sure to use a good moisturizer afterwards. If you are going out in the sun, use one with a high SPF. Lemons can make your skin sensitive to sunlight and you may end up with worse discoloration.

2. Sugar Scrub

Sugar is an excellent exfoliative substance and since most Americans go through 10 pounds of sugar per year, chances are good you have this natural ingredient in your home. Make a paste with sugar and olive oil and gently clean your skin. Avoid the delicate eye area. You can compound the effects of the paste by adding a little lemon or lime juice to it.

If you have sensitive skin, replace white sugar with brown sugar. Brown sugar is softer and less likely to irritate the skin.

3. Sandalwood Paste

This concoction is frequently used in India and other Eastern countries to whiten skin. Sandalwood paste has other beauty benefits such as clearing up acne, minimizing pores, and removing excess oil from the skin. Combine sandalwood powder with lemon juice and apply the paste to affected skin. Leave on for 15 minutes and then wash thoroughly.

4. Milk Bath

It is rumored that Cleopatra took milk baths to lighten her skin. Milk contains lactic acid which works to strip away the outer layers of skin. To take advantage of this at-home skin whitening treatment, pour a gallon of milk in your bath and soak for at least 30 minutes. For the face, make a paste of milk and sugar and leave on for 15 minutes. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizing lotion.

5. Tomato Juice

Tomato juice has been used for years to lighten tans gone wrong. The acid and enzymes in tomatoes have bleaching qualities similar to lemons. If you are trying to lighten the skin on your body, cut a tomato in half and rub it over the parts you want to make lighter. For the skin on the face, make a mask of oatmeal and tomato juice and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Be sure to wear sunscreen if you plan to be in the sun.

6. Cucumbers

Like many other vegetables, cucumbers have been used since the dawn of time in beauty regimens. The most common use is to help get rid of bags under the eyes. Cucumbers have natural diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it the perfect vegetable for alleviating skin irritations. It can also lighten skin. Cut thin slices of cucumber and apply them to the area you want to whiten for 10 to 15 minutes. As an alternative, juice the cucumber and apply the juice to your face.

7. Egg Mask

Eggs are excellent sources of protein, sulphur, and vitamin D, all of which promote healthy hair, skin, and nails from the inside out. However, eggs can be used in beauty regimens to improve the look of skin. There are a couple of ways to use egg whites. One way is to brush the egg white directly on the face and let it dry. Be warned; your face will feel tight. Another way is to combine it with oatmeal and a little bit of lemon juice. Let the mask sit for 15 minutes and rinse.

It’s important to note that these home remedies are limited in their effectiveness. They may only lighten skin one or two shades.
